Music .

The definition of music is "an art form whose medium is sound". This art form creates the tremendous meaning throughout this first scene of the Titanic. It has the ability to create a mood for the audience, which in many cases is more emotional and powerful than any actor performing on stage.

In the first scene of the award winning movie, Titanic, one song sets the mood for the entire movie. This song is "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. It portrays the emotion of true love and heart ache. The audience receives this message by the heart-felt lyrics within the song.

"Near, Far, Wherever you are,

I believe that heart does go on.

Once more, you open the door,

And youre here in my heart and, my heart will go on and on."

I think the director, by picking this song, told the audience that love lasts forever, even if it's only in memories. You CAN love again. Love leaves us bruised, not broken, despite how we feel at the time. It only takes one person, too change the rest of our lives , and this movie shows us this .

Even by reading the title of Celine Dion's masterpiece you can tell that a character has lost someone very close too them, someone that they will always love. Add the very slow tempo and the beautiful instrumental and you have a perfect love-song.

The director effectively used the technique of music in the first scene by using:

-Olden day images of the Titanic leaving the wharf, which was a very exciting moment for the passengers on board. It was a honour too be aboard on such a fine cruise boat and they were excited of the prospect of going too America. You could clearly see this emotion on their faces during a close up shot, which is purposely why the director chose to do so.

-combing this with this heart-breaking song.

His intention for doing this was to show there would be a tragedy during the film, leaving them intrigued and wanting to know more.

Another example of this technique within the first scene is when the search team are in the water, searching for the "blue diamond". The director used dark colours too create are rather frightening tone for the audience. But what created the mood for us was the music that played. The notes were long and low, as this kept us in suspense and showed us that it wasnt a good situation that they were in. It was the complete opposite of the first part they showed us, as by listening too this music we could tell something had happened, and they were searching for what was left behind.

In conclusion music is a very important aspect of any movie, but it is vital in the movie "Titanic". As this one song was essential to set the first scene and vital to complete the story .

Genre / Atmosphere.

The director, James Cameron, wanted to convey the emotional message of this tragedy. He succeeded in doing this by showing us two vital parts of the history of the titanic. The first is the cruise boat leaving the wharf with the passengers on board, smiling and waving, as they prepare for their journey. This also sets a mood for the audience, which makes us excited for the prospect of a glamorous cruise. The second part is a more serious side, which makes the audience live in suspense as we question how the incident happened. The director created this effect by using dark tones to change the mood. The audience could see by the dive team searching the boat and with the horrific images they could tell this wouldn't be a happy ending.

Reason for selection .

Titanic
-The opening of the "Titanic" is where the recovery crew is in the water where the cruise boat sunk. They are trying to find the rare 'blue diamond' worth millions of dollars. They broadcast this on the news where one of the main characters, Rose Bukater, sees it. This is where the story begins and the flashbacks start.
-The beginning of this movie shows the audience some of the important facts, which will help them later on in the film. Some of these facts include that the boat sunk with many people loosing their lives, there is a missing peice of jewellery, and a survivor of the incident is still alive.
-This movie appealed to me because it is a romantic drama, which is my favourite genre . It also appealed to me because the entire film is brought together with one song, "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. This is a beautiful song and i love how it sums up the entire movie. A theme of this movie is too believe in what you love and i think thats an important message that we all need to learn . That is why i chose the "Titanic".
