PRODUCTION - Evaluation

1.Pre-production meeting
- The tasks we needed to complete for the pre-production were split evenly between Melissa and myself. Both of us worked hard at these tasks to ensure they would be worth a good mark. We knew this would be the part of the production that we could both excell in and made the most of it. I dont believe we could improve on the way we approached the tasks and we completed them as a team.
The pre production tasks i completed were the Location / Permission, Production Schedule, Crew & Talent , Technology and the Concept. I think i did these tasks to the best of my ability.

B.Peer Reveiw
- Melissa put in alot of effort in the pre-production tasks as she is very talented writer. The tasks she completed were the Storyboard, The treatment, Script and the Art Department.
Many of the tasks she completed were very long and detailed and i personally thought she did a very good job at all of them. I think the hard work she put into these tasks will help us alot in our final grade.

2.Production Meeting
-Our production meeting included deligating roles in our movie. We both agreed that Melissa was a better camera operater than myself, and it was also her dad's camera that we were using. We also decided that we would require more actors to play the parts in the film other then just myself.
The characters in our short movie are :
- Rosie ( Sandra Sullivan ) - Stalker / Ex Best friend
- Anna ( Lucy Harris ) - New Best Friend
- Stacey ( Ashleigh Stevenson ) - Girl in the middle
- We had to be logical when making production decisions and making sure that we wernt making it impossible for ourselves. We were both directors and made the decisions together , but when Melissa was a camera operater I was an actor. The rest of the production process we did togeher and split the work evenly.

B.Peer Reveiw
-Melissa did a fantastic job at filming! One of the best aspects was her use of shots. She worked extremley hard to use a wide range of shots and to change her angles to show the audience, the actors in different perspectives. Im very proud of the effort she put into the filming (:

3.Post Production Meeting
-Our post production was more difficult tehn the other tasks. This was due to many things interrupting our progress. Unfortunatley Melissa became sick in the middle of the editing process, but this didnt stop her from contributing 110% into all aspects of the editing process. She began making a movie at home using her own programme whilst i was still at school. As soon as i finished my classes, she came over and we finished the editing of our film together. This meant we could both put in our thoughts and ideas for our final film.

B. Peer Reveiw
-I think how Melissa was so unwell but continued to edit our movie just shows how determined she was to do a good job. She did extremley well when it came to the editing process and made many valuable contributions. I couldnt have done this without her and i think we worked extremley well as a pair (:

PRODUCTION - Technology

Camera Operation - We found using the camera easy as it was my dad's camera and I had used it a bit in the past. By taking advantage of test shots and being able to alter the camera settings we were in reach of a successful film.

Composing Shots - To enable the audience to be able to see the characters in different perspectives, we used many different angles to show the different expressions of the actors. Yet again we found this task simplistic as we had developed our skills whilst working with the camera and were able to compose effective shots.

Recording or using sound effects, dialogue or music - In our film, Mon Nouveau Bestfriend, we didn't need to use sounds effects to create a platonic atmosphere. We did use a significant amount of dialogue to help the audience understand the storyline and the relationships between the three girls. Using dialogue was also an easy task as the camera picked up the dialogue very easily. Although we were unaware at the time that the camera also picked up the excessive amount of wind during the night scenes. We manage to subside the noise by our use of editing but we were unable to override it completely. We used music to enhance the atmosphere and keep the audience in anticipation. The songs we incorporated into the movie are :
-Smile - Avril Lavinge
-If you ever come back - The Script
-Best thing i never had - Beyonce
-Sleepwalker - Adam Lambert
All four of these songs help us to convey the message in each of our scenes. We didn't find it difficult to use music in our movie and found it easy to convert the files. First of all I used a music converter and saved it as a file on my computer. We furthermore imported it onto the movie programme we was using. We found this easy as we had prior experience from movies we had made in primary school.

Importing images and video files - We used quite a few images to show the relationships between the three girls and how the friendships have changed. We downloaded the photos from facebook onto our usb, then imported them to the movie maker. This wasn't difficult and it barley took any time to complete this task. Downloading the video files was straight forward as all we had to do was plug the camera into the computer and download them. Both importing the images and video files was very simple and we felt like we did well in completing this task.

Editing images for moving image production -
This part of the post production was the most time consuming but also our most effective. The editing phase took a lot of time, but the effort that was put into it created a great film. We used transitions to have a smooth run through from scene to scene.
-The keyhole - We chose to use this transition to show Rosie (the stalker) arriving home after her eventful evening when she overheard her ex best friend betraying her.
-The eyeball - Represents Rosie's eye , as she is stalking the two new friends from behind a bush. This is showing the audience Rosie's perspective of the situation as it is from her view.
-Zigzagged opening- We chose this to represent Rosie and Staceys' friendship parting. This use of editing shows how the protagonist, Rosie, is feeling in the current situation and how every second of the movie she is further and further away from where she used to be with Stacey. It is as if they are both being pulled in different directions.
We also used an editing programme to lighten the scenes that were filmed at night. Although the scenes are still quite dark, we were able to clearly see the significant impact it had on this part of the film.
These are only a few of the techniques we used throughout our film, but they are the most significant examples of editing that help enhance our storyline.

Editing sound for moving image production - We chose songs that we thought would create an atmosphere for our film and not draw away the impact we were trying to portray. The only time consuming part about this task was editing the songs to fit the images. We didn't want the song to interrupt the scene or overlap onto another shot. Therefore editing the song to the exact length and to have to right impact on each scene was difficult, but we managed and we personally think we did a very good job (:

PRODUCTION - Location / Permissions

We filmed at these locations :

Westlake Reserve
- This tranquil area provided a peaceful and scerene atmosphere to film our scene.
It was a beautiful lake surrounded by nature at its best.

The Quarry Hill

Personal Response To Media Mock Exam !

My first essay that i attempted was 'Genre Study'. I feel like this was the better of the two as we had spent more time on it during class. I know that i couldve done better , if i had studied. During the exam i freaked out as there were so many blank pages to complete. This has given me more motivation to do well in the end of year exams.
Representations was alot harder as i hadnt memorised any of the advertisements. I had to bluff my way through the essay , therefore i feel like that will impact my grade. I was also distracted through the second essay, as i really had to go to the bathroom ... (:
I promise you that i will do alot better at the end of year, but feel free to give me some good marks, just because you love us (:

PRODUCTION - Treatment

Our film title : mon nouveau bestfriend (c)

The very opening of the film consists of happy, cute photos of two best friends enjoying life to the full. These photos are of Stacey and Rosie - before the replacement of a friend occurred.

In the first scene the two friends are sitting on a park bench discussing minor details of their weekend etc.  Further discussion continues as the camera tilts above the heads of the two girls and a car is seen driving into the car park. As a close up occurs of the driver, creepy music is playing suggesting the unwanted feeling of the person who has arrived. As the two friends get up and leave, the 'stalker' - a teenage girl named Rosie - gets out of the car and takes a seat where the friends once sat. As the pair get further away Rosie begins to follow them. The scene continues with the stalker getting in a bush to listen in on what is being said between the two friends. Rosie begins talking to herself to show her mental unstability and her jealousy for the pair in which she was once part of. The camera continues following the pair and we furthermore see the stalker keeping tabs on the actions of the two in which she is stalking. A final confrontation occurs in this scene to end it all off. Anna and Stacey (the two teen girls being stalked) are on the swings talking about Anna's life... of course... Rosie makes her first known appearance to the girls by confronting them on the playground. Stacey and Rosie are happy to see one another as they were best friends not too long ago. Anna therefore buts in and makes it very clear to Stacey - it's one or the other. Rosie is left standing alone after Stacey chooses Anna over her. A camera shot of Rosie walking away disappointed is the last piece to this scene.

Our next scene consists of a night time driving scene up a hill over looking the lights. Two cars are present, one following the other. One at a time they both pull up on the gravel. Anna and Stacey have just had a night out (a dinner date) unaware that Rosie has been following them around all evening. The camera switches between cars as a conversation develops between the pair. (Yet again of course, about Anna). A text message is sent from Rosie within her car to Stacey's phone - however Anna is the one to read the message saying "I miss you x" As Anna and Stacey agree that the text was weird... Rosie gets mad as she has overheard what the girls have been saying about her. A shot of her saying, "that bitch", and of her driving away ends the hill scene effectively as she is super annoyed and the tense atmosphere sets up for a smooth transition towards the next scene.
The next scene consists of the stalker arriving home (from the hill scene) slamming the door and walking straight towards the computer. Rosie is infuriated about the strong connection between the best friends, as Stacey has replaced her with Anna and makes a plan to get rid of her old best friend, Stacey. She stalks the photos of Stacey and Anna on facebook angrily remembering when she was best friends with Stacey.

The final scene is of a hand pulling open a bedside draw and reaching towards a gun of some kind. As this is the opening of a film, the first bit should capture the audience's attention, and grasp them deep into the plot so they continue watching the rest of the movie.

PRODUCTION - Concept

The theme for our production is a revenge story based on the fading friendship between two teenaged girls. In our scenes there is the idea of betrayel and desperation, as a stalker is following the two friends on their outtings.
She is completley miserable as she longs for the friendship she once had with her friend Stacey.
She will go to any length to remove Anna (Staceys new bestfriend), from the situation, as Anna is the reason that Stacey and Rosie are no longer friends.
The storyline is based around Rosie and the way she is reacting to losing her bestfriend and also the way that Stacey is being treated by her new friend, Anna, who thinks she rules their friendship. We portray this by having many outtings between the newly founded friends, and having Rosie following them and watching from the sideline. This shows the audience how Rosie is feeling : excluded, unwanted and unloved.
Our final scene creates anticipation for the audience as it is capturing the essence of revenge. It creates a hanging moment and makes us wonder, if happy endings do come true.

Lighting

Lighting is a powerful aspect of any film. It enhances the performance by adding a certain tone or mood, which the director is trying to get across to the audience.

Example 1
When the excited passengers are waving goodbye in the opening scene. The director skillfully used the technique of lighting to portray the different time periods. He used a subtle bronze monotone (like the colour in olden day pictures) to show us that this scene was a flashback in time. It was if someone had videoed it back in time, when the boat left the harbour. I think the director used this technique in such a way to show meaning. He wanted the audience to feel the way each passenger did on that specific day. The thrill, excitement, maybe even heartache as they left loved ones behind. I think it also makes the audience wish they were there at the time because it was such an extraordinary event. Although, we wouldn't want to be on the boat.

Example 2
The second example is when the focus is on the shimmery blue water. It is as if there are small spotlights in the waters reflection, which makes it change colour. The ocean colour changes from a light blue, to a deeper blue and then to a black. I believe the director chose to show the deeper meaning behind the water. The light blue shows what ordinary people see when the look at the ocean... just some water. The deeper blue shows us that people know the water is deep but they think nothing more of it. The black represents the unknowing. It portrays to the audience that there are many memories, many secrets, many lives lying in the bottom of that ocean. The director wanted us too understand the full meaning behind that emotion of heartache, which is why he chose this use of lighting.

Script / Dialogue

The script of the play is the written manuscript, and the dialogue is how the characters interpret it. The dialogue is crucial in any movie as it is the storyline. The whole film is based upon the words that come out of the characters mouth. Every phrase, every sentence, every word has been specifically chosen to help create the story. This is what differs film from reality. When we speak, we say what comes to mind. We don't have too worry about creating an atmosphere or engaging in a conversation with someone who doesn't speak the way we do. The dialogue has been chosen by the writer to create a character, rather then a character creating the dialogue. In the extraordinary masterpiece Titanic certain dialogue represents events, which help us (the audience) put together the pieces of the story.

Example 1
Ruth, is the mother of the well brought up young lady, Rose. She speaks a piece of dialogue that i find rather important within the first scene. "So this is the ship they say is unsinkable''. She says this as if shes impressed by the creators of the marvelous vessel, but really, the writers have chosen to say this line as it is ironic, since the ship actually sunk. Everyone on board of the Titanic believed it was unsinkable, this was the reason there wern't enough lifeboats, because it was such an extraordinary ship they believed it couldn't sink, which led to an unaccountable amount of deaths. As Ruth said this line, she was staring at the Titanic, looking at the luxury aspects which would enhance her stay there. It portrayed how oblivious the guests were on board and how many aspects were overlooked, just because of the share size of the Titanic.

Example 2
Rose is the narrator of the storyline. Shes telling her version of her experience on the Titanic, making her a very important part of the film. An important piece of dialogue she says is "I was just wondering if you had found the 'Heart of the Ocean' yet, Mr. Lovett''.  She says this while on the phone to the head of the search party. She contacts him after seeing a report on a finding of his, while searching the sunken Titanic. The picture he found was of her, wearing the 'Blue Diamond' necklace. When Rose sees this report she looks almost frightened as she reminisces of her past. Shes intrigued of their findings and wants too find out more. The call the 'Blue Diamond''necklace 'The heart of the ocean' because this rare and extremely expensive necklace was in the shape of a heart and was believed too be at the bottom of the ocean inside the Titanic. I believe the writer chose to incorporate this line into the movie because it is the start of Rose sharing her story with her granddaughter and the search team.

Character / Performance

A character performance is "a part of role in a musical, dramatic or other entertainment presented for an audience". A character portrays the emotions from the directors point of view, to help the audience comprehend the current scenario. Within the first scene of the Titanic there are a few examples of a characters performance which help enhance this situation.

Example 1
When the Protagonist, Jack, wins two tickets to board the Titanic, with only minutes to spare before the boat leaves the wharf. Jack shows us his excitement, through his facial expressions. With his smile from ear to ear, we get the sense that Jack is not the luckiest of characters, and for him to win under such extraordinary circumstances shows us, that he may be heading in a new direction. It also shows us that Jack is a free spirit. He has no ties to the city, family or workplace. Him and his bestfriend are both treating life as one giant adventure, and this being the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. They both sprint to the wharf, showing how anxious he is to board the boat. He is almost gasping for air, and we can not tell whether this is because of how fast he is running, he is simply out of breath due to his excitement or are they running away from the two men they were playing poker with only a few minutes ago. We never know the answer but the audience can expect that two lower class men like themselves, were ecstatic to board such a fine vessel like the Titanic.

Example 2
Within the first scene you also see another main character, Rose, board the ship. Immediately you can compare the two characters too the variably differed lives. She is dressed elegantly, as a well brought up first class daughter would be. Rose is wearing a rather large hat with her attire, which is tilt slightly. This portrays to the audience that there is another side too Rose that you can not see, but perhaps we will see it later on in the film. There is so much thought and planning gone into her departure of the country. She has alot of responsibilities, her life is already mapped out for her. By having low angle shots towards Rose in this scene, its as if she is of high importance, and everyone "looks up" to her. Where as there are alot of high angle shots towards jack as if the worlds looking down on his carefree life.

These two actors play two completely different characters. Their way of living, their dress code, the way they talk and alot more. They help the audience comprehend their status and their way of life, so we understand the backround of the film. This is important for us too know, for the rest of the movie.

Music .

The definition of music is "an art form whose medium is sound". This art form creates the tremendous meaning throughout this first scene of the Titanic. It has the ability to create a mood for the audience, which in many cases is more emotional and powerful than any actor performing on stage.

In the first scene of the award winning movie, Titanic, one song sets the mood for the entire movie. This song is "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. It portrays the emotion of true love and heart ache. The audience receives this message by the heart-felt lyrics within the song.

"Near, Far, Wherever you are,
I believe that heart does go on.
Once more, you open the door,
And youre here in my heart and, my heart will go on and on."

I think the director, by picking this song, told the audience that love lasts forever, even if it's only in memories. You CAN love again. Love leaves us bruised, not broken, despite how we feel at the time. It only takes one person, too change the rest of our lives , and this movie shows us this .
Even by reading the title of Celine Dion's masterpiece you can tell that a character has lost someone very close too them, someone that they will always love. Add the very slow tempo and the beautiful instrumental and you have a perfect love-song.

The director effectively used the technique of music in the first scene by using:
-Olden day images of the Titanic leaving the wharf, which was a very exciting moment for the passengers on board. It was a honour too be aboard on such a fine cruise boat and they were excited of the prospect of going too America. You could clearly see this emotion on their faces during a close up shot, which is purposely why the director chose to do so.
&&
-combing this with this heart-breaking song.
His intention for doing this was to show there would be a tragedy during the film, leaving them intrigued and wanting to know more.

Another example of this technique within the first scene is when the search team are in the water, searching for the "blue diamond". The director used dark colours too create are rather frightening tone for the audience. But what created the mood for us was the music that played. The notes were long and low, as this kept us in suspense and showed us that it wasnt a good situation that they were in. It was the complete opposite of the first part they showed us, as by listening too this music we could tell something had happened, and they were searching for what was left behind.

In conclusion music is a very important aspect of any movie, but it is vital in the movie "Titanic". As this one song was essential to set the first scene and vital to complete the story .

Genre / Atmosphere.

The director, James Cameron, wanted to convey the emotional message of this tragedy. He succeeded in doing this by showing us two vital parts of the history of the titanic. The first is the cruise boat leaving the wharf with the passengers on board, smiling and waving, as they prepare for their journey. This also sets a mood for the audience, which makes us excited for the prospect of a glamorous cruise. The second part is a more serious side, which makes the audience live in suspense as we question how the incident happened. The director created this effect by using dark tones to change the mood. The audience could see by the dive team searching the boat and with the horrific images they could tell this wouldn't be a happy ending.

Reason for selection .

Titanic
-The opening of the "Titanic" is where the recovery crew is in the water where the cruise boat sunk. They are trying to find the rare 'blue diamond' worth millions of dollars. They broadcast this on the news where one of the main characters, Rose Bukater, sees it. This is where the story begins and the flashbacks start.
-The beginning of this movie shows the audience some of the important facts, which will help them later on in the film. Some of these facts include that the boat sunk with many people loosing their lives, there is a missing peice of jewellery, and a survivor of the incident is still alive.
-This movie appealed to me because it is a romantic drama, which is my favourite genre . It also appealed to me because the entire film is brought together with one song, "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. This is a beautiful song and i love how it sums up the entire movie. A theme of this movie is too believe in what you love and i think thats an important message that we all need to learn . That is why i chose the "Titanic".

Im looking at different movies to study currently . I still havnt chosen one (:
